Questions and Answers about NOW Foods, L-Tryptophan

Have a Question?

Ask a Question
  • What is the difference between tryptophan and L-tryptophan?

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that can exist in two forms: D-tryptophan and L-tryptophan. L-tryptophan is the form that is more commonly found in dietary supplements and is better absorbed and utilized by the body.

  • Is L-tryptophan a good sleep aid?

L-tryptophan may help improve sleep quality by increasing the production of serotonin and melatonin, two neurotransmitters involved in sleep regulation.

  • Is L-tryptophan safe now?

Yes, L-tryptophan supplements are now considered safe when taken in recommended doses. In the past, L-tryptophan supplements were temporarily banned due to contamination issues, but these issues have been resolved, and L-tryptophan supplements are now widely available.

  • Why was tryptophan banned?

In 1989, L-tryptophan supplements were temporarily banned due to a series of cases of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) linked to contaminated L-tryptophan supplements from a specific manufacturer in Japan. The ban was lifted in 2005 after the contamination issue was resolved.

  • Who should avoid tryptophan?

People taking certain medications, such as antidepressants, should consult their doctor before taking L-tryptophan supplements, as there may be potential interactions. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also seek medical advice before taking L-tryptophan.

  • Is NOW Foods, L-Tryptophan FDA approved?

Dietary supplements, including L-tryptophan, are not directly approved by the FDA. However, the FDA does regulate dietary supplements and requires manufacturers to follow good manufacturing practices (GMPs) to ensure the quality and safety of their products.
