Questions and Answers about NOW Foods, Nutritional Yeast Flakes
Have a Question?
-
Are nutritional yeast flakes good for you?
Nutritional yeast flakes are a good source of B vitamins, protein, and fiber. They are low in fat and sodium and are often fortified with additional vitamins and minerals, making them a nutritious addition to a balanced diet.
-
How to use nutritional yeast flakes?
Nutritional yeast flakes are versatile and can be used in various ways to enhance the flavor and nutritional content of foods. They can be sprinkled over popcorn, salads, or roasted vegetables for a cheesy, nutty flavor. Many people use nutritional yeast as a cheese substitute in vegan dishes, such as in pasta sauces or as a topping for baked potatoes.
-
Is nutritional yeast flakes MSG?
Nutritional yeast flakes do not contain added MSG (monosodium glutamate). However, they do naturally contain glutamic acid, which is an amino acid that contributes to the savory, umami flavor of nutritional yeast. This glutamic acid is bound in proteins and is not the same as the free glutamic acid found in MSG.
-
How much nutritional yeast flakes per day?
The amount of nutritional yeast flakes to consume daily can vary depending on individual needs and preferences. Generally, a serving size of nutritional yeast is about 1 to 2 tablespoons, which provides a good boost of B vitamins and protein. Some people may consume up to 3-4 tablespoons per day without issues.
-
Does nutritional yeast have side effects?
While nutritional yeast is generally safe for most people, some individuals may experience side effects. These can include digestive issues such as bloating or gas, especially when first introducing nutritional yeast into the diet or consuming large amounts. Some people may also experience headaches or skin reactions. Additionally, individuals with yeast sensitivities or those prone to yeast infections might need to be cautious with their intake.
-
Do nutritional yeast flakes need to be refrigerated?
Nutritional yeast flakes typically do not need to be refrigerated. They have a naturally low moisture content, which helps prevent the growth of bacteria and mold. However, to maintain freshness and prevent clumping, it's best to store nutritional yeast in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. An airtight container in a pantry or cupboard is usually sufficient.
